York hotels

York hotels in the historic northern capital of England for a short break or vacation. With many historic attractions, combined with excellent accommodation and cuisine, York is an ideal place for a holiday in England.

The history of York starts with the Celtic Brigante tribe who preceded the Roman invasion in AD 71. The Romans built a wall around the centre of York to act as a fort protecting the city. Many of the hotels in York are situated in close vicinity of the city walls. The next prominent occupancy was by the Vikings, who arrived in 867 and there are still remnants of their dominance in the city today. The Jorvik centre gives tourists the unique chance to experience the sights and sounds of life when the Vikings were in York, no doubt very different to the luxury York hotels, which serve as accommodation for visitors today.

After the Viking dominance came the Norman invasion in 1066. William the Conqueror ordered York to be burnt to quash the Northumbrian's rebellious spirit. However, the walls were soon rebuilt and York became the prosperous wool trade centre. The city walls built at this time mostly still remain today, easily accessible from York hotels littered around the city. The walls can be walked around and many visitors take advantage of this opportunity. An excellent view of York Minster, a fabulous piece of architecture, can be gained from the city walls.

Running through the centre of York, the River Ouse provided, in the past, an important means of trade. A trip along the Ouse today, gives visitors the chance to see the city at leisure. Many York hotels are centred close to the River and provide ideal accommodation for touring the city.
